It is primarily a mystery/thriller with a touch of a fantasy AHEAD!Story A seemingly perfect husband & wife's young child is kidnapped and eventually found dead. The mother is distraught and tries to drown herself, but she fails. When she awakens from her unsuccessful suicide attempt, she finds she has traveled back in time 14 days prior to her daughter's death. Events from the previous 2 weeks start repeating themselves, and she soon realizes she better figure out what's going on in order to prevent the future death of her daughter from happening initial premise of the show is set up quite well. It's not clear why this woman was sent back in time or why she's the only one who's aware of the events to come. It is apparently due to "God's gift", but this is never fully explained and there are very little religious overtones here. In fact, this time travel plot often gets lost in the scheme of things, except mostly at the beginning of the show, and at the very end; it does pop up occasionally, but this show spends a considerable amount of time focusing on its mystery and thriller elements instead. And surprisingly, there are very few romantic, comedic, or familiar melodramatic aspects to be found at all. It makes sense to not include these standard K-drama motifs in a show like this though; after all, what couple really has time for romance and fun with their costars when their daughter is about to be murdered? While I appreciate the effort to avoid typical K-drama themes for a change, the absence of these themes does create some problems when you have 16 hours to fill with nothing but one continuing mystery/thriller plot line. As such, this story is often unnecessarily byzantine during its run time; once this show hits its stride, there's a bevy of characters introduced who may or may not be the eventual kidnapper/killer, or who may be connected to the crime in some way. Each week it appears they might have finally caught the actual bad guys, only to find one more layer of the onion to peel back in next week's episode. The show is good at keeping you guessing who the culprits is/are, but this rinse and repeat approach to storytelling does becomes tedious when you have to keep it going for much longer than is really from a few missteps, production values are satisfactory for a K-drama for the most part, though there are a few scenes and one glaring one involving a car skidding out of control where the editing and CGI departments didn't quite get the job done. There's only so much these departments can do on a TV show though that airs twice is pretty solid, and the writers did pen an interesting & intricate story that they clearly worked very hard on. You'll have to pay attention in order to start connecting everything together down the stretch run, and this isn't always easy when you're a K-drama binge watcher like I am who also likes to have a few drinks along the way. The story is not really complicated, but I often prefer my K-dramas to require as little attention as possible while viewing, and this is a show that really doesn't afford you that is mostly solid, but there are a few insufferably annoying characters on this show that will make you want to punch your TV. And as usual, you have to view everybody's performances here under the guise & understanding of how these K-dramas roles are typically portrayed. Lee Bo-young is fantastic throughout in the lead role of the desperate mom who'll do anything to save her daughter's life. Cho Seung-woo is solid as the main costar portraying a washed up cop trying to help Bo-young's character & her daughter while also trying to save his retarded brother on death row, heal past wounds, & reconnect with his family. There's various other important starring &/or supporting characters that are too numerous to mention in great detail Bo-young's husband, the police squad leader, various potential bad guys, etc, but, I must give some credit to the 8-9 year old girl Kim Yoo-bin who plays the young daughter; she's tasked with portraying a number of traits and emotions of a typical girl of that age, while acting opposite adults. Her character is also forever getting kidnapped, threatened, and put in harm's way by a host of menacing bad guys; this would seem a bit scary to me if I were a little girl, but Yoo-bin just rolls with it all like a while there is no real humor to speak of, there is one thing which recurs time and again that I found particularly amusing; the husband and wife's baffling lapses in remembering that practically everyone in Korea is trying to kidnap & kill their little daughter. They both love and want to protect her, and often go to great lengths to save her, then they just let her wander off again, or leave her in the care of some incompetent weirdo or stranger or someone they know holds a grudge against them. I guess you need some means by which to keep the daughter in continual peril It's pretty good, but it has some faults and probably should've been pared down to the 12 episode range. I liked it overall, but I would have rated this at least a point lower than I did, if not for how it concluded. You'll have to sit & sift through A LOT in order to get the finish line, so the final payoff better be good when you eventually get there, and it is!Bottom Line to 8 out of 10 stars. Very Well Recommended if you can overlook its flaws. 15 out of 15 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. Permalink

Lee Bo-young's previous SBS hit is undoubtedly a great series. In a medium mostly about surface treatments, a series that respects its plot and characters like "I Hear Your Voice" did is rare. When the actress was cast in "God's Gift - 14 Days" , a series about a mother's fight to save her daughter, many fans saw another brilliant series in the making. Sadly, this industry's risk aversion, adoration of the male element and flawed filming system turned what could have been a masterpiece in its medium into just another entertaining, but not top quality series. AdvertisementWhen a little girl named Saet-byeol Kim Yoo-bin-I is kidnapped and later found drowned in a lake, her mother, Kim Soo-hyeon Lee Bo-young decides to take her own life. As she jumps into the same lake, a man named Gi Dong-chan Cho Seung-woo is also being thrown in it by a group of thugs. When they come out, they realize they have traveled 14 days into the past. Remembering a mysterious woman who spoke to her about this happening, Soo-hyeon finds Dong-chan and together they try to stop the events that lead to Saet-byeol's death, as well as discover how they are both connected to the big picture that starts forming. The first thing to say about "God's Gift - 14 Days" is that it is not a bad series. It is not great, but it is definitely not something bad for drama standards. It has some great acting, the mystery is kept alive until the very end although the supernatural part is never addressed, its pace does not slow to the point it becomes boring and its production quality is quite nice and atmosphere appropriate for its genre. There are some interesting characters, different types of relationship dynamics explored and it is generally a very busy and entertaining show, if killing some time is what one wants to achieve. However, the series fails in some ways in its two most important elements. The mystery and how it presents it to the viewer and most importantly, by losing sight of its premise and original element of appeal. The thing about mysteries is that they need to be airtight. They need to present just enough to the viewer for them to stand a chance at making legitimate guesses. When a mystery is solved, the viewer should be able to piece it all together and when they go back, they should realize they already had everything they needed to figure it out. The series stumbles in the sense that the writer seemed to be creating some things as they went along, even changing things already established, just to serve their new plans. This is evident very early on, when a scene that was presented with a seemingly insignificant character played by an extra earlier in the series is changed to serve the developments. During later episodes, the creators re-film this scene and replace the actor there with one of the main actors and his character, to reveal the person we had seen in that process was in fact this character we have known. This is cheating viewers out of their chances, but also shows the creator has no idea what they are doing further down the road. It is very likely the series is filled with such issues, some obvious the first time around, some probably to be discovered for anyone who watches it again. But this drama's worst betrayal of its own premise and fans is how it handled its female lead and her story. What started as a series based on 'The Story of a Mother', featuring a strong woman out to save her child soon started to shift. By the end, slowly, painfully, it had been turned into a worship of the male lead, even going as far as to show him altering the original tale to make it about a Knight fighting to save the little girl. In perhaps an allegorical twist, this just showed the overall intentions of the production. The female character went from being the one that mattered and moved the plot to a plus one. She turned into the typical reckless and hysterical woman who had to be stopped, brought to her senses and constantly saved by the male lead whose own story took the wheel. She was not only used as a punching bag, getting kidnapped, beaten and generally abused by men just to become a damsel for the hero to save, but she was eventually pushed aside. What started as female lead centric proceeded as a work with two leads and eventually became male lead centric. The same thing happened with her daughter, whose fate ended up being just another piece of the big picture in the male lead's world. Her life turned into just another plot device. It is basically striking women down for daring to be the heroines in their own stories. And this shows another big problem of this industry and its live filming system. Give audiences what they demand, even if it means not staying true to your work and messing up its coherence. The ending of the series also has a lot of people angry, which is perfectly understandable. Rushed, unfinished and with conflicting characterization, the ending was simply a culmination of the downfall this series brought upon itself. As mentioned earlier, there are many parts of "God's Gift - 14 Days" that are entertaining and it is by far not the worst thing out there. But a series which fails at the two things it was supposed to do well and which started as something with all the elements it needed to become exceptional, but ended in a half-baked attempt at what it originally tried to do is a frustrating sight. Sadly, it is also not a surprising one in this medium. Written by Orion from 'Orion's Ramblings' Follow OrionsRamblings

Completed B_ann132 people found this review helpful Story 10 Acting/Cast 10 Music 10 Rewatch Value I am going to start this review by saying what every woman who watched the show wants to say Ki Dong Chan, marry me. If you don't want to watch this drama for the plot, watch it for this man. If there was an award called "The Biggest Heartthrob" Ki Dong Chan would win that category, hands down and no questions asked. This man is not only incredibly handsome, he is also smart, loyal, funny, selfless and on top of that kicks ass like a pro. I've probably never seen a more attractive character in any TV show. Okay that's enough time wasted on my preferences in male characters, now for the actual review. When I first clicked in to rate this show, I gave the drama a 9. But then I did what every normal person does after watching an insanely good show - went to spazz to my mom about it - and I realized that I used the word "masterpiece" to describe this drama so many times that I had to come back and change it to a full 10. It was that good. Plot vise this drama really is a masterpiece. I was sitting on the edge of my chair the whole time while watching and I bet you'll do the same. Just when you think you've caught on to the plot and know how the scenario is going to play out, something new and unexpected is thrown in your face. I was confused for the most part and you will be too, but don't worry, cause in the end, everything will click into place and you're gonna be left with your mouth gaping open, thinking that how on earth does such a complicated story come down to such a simple trigger. But I'll say no more, I don't want to spoil anything. One of the things that I really liked about this drama was that after I was finished, I was left with a sort of full feeling. This is one of the few dramas where there is an actual message in the plot; something that says something really important about the world. It's a theme that becomes evident already in the plot and is carried out throughout the entire drama a real mother will do anything to protect her child. I definitely liked how the theme was portrayed in the drama via various characters. Cast and acting was top class. I've always respected Lee Bo Young but I was still amazed how spot-on her interpretation of Kim Soo Hyun was. She was a very convincing devastated mother but somehow also managed to incorporate a tough woman image into the character. She also had great chemistry with her co-actor, Cho Seung Woo who plays Ki Dong Chan. Now, I already talked about him but if it didn't become clear yet, I'll spell it out for you. I'm in love with this man. He is not just an amazing actor but also a great singer and insanely dreamy. Search up his musicals, they're great. I'm also going to take a moment to mention Kim Yoo Bin who plays the role of Soo Hyun's daughter, Han Saet Byul. Her acting is what it is, I won't comment much on that but considering her age, she is pretty great. She is one of the most promising child actors right now and I'm sure we're going to be seeing her a lot in the future. And then, last but not least, I want to talk about one of the two idols who acted in this drama, Baro. I was really surprised and even a bit worried when I heard what kind of a role he'd be taking on, just because playing a character with an intellectual disability can be very difficult and also very emotional doesn't sound exactly right but I hope you get the point. Turns out I worried for nothing. Baro was great in his role and following his character, Yong Gyu, and his friendship with Saet Byul was very heartwarming. There isn't really much that I want to say about the music for this drama. It was good and suited the scenes and there was a nice range of songs from emotional pieces to more intense and dark ones that went well with the action. I have nothing to complain about so full ten it is. One last thing that I want to mention is that this drama could be considered horror as a genre. There isn't any real massacre or slaughtering well there's a bit but the psychological war that goes on in this drama is really terrifying. I had a hard time watching some bits alone in my room, late at night, so just take a little caution on that. Rewatchability is definitely also very high because the plot is very confusing until the very end and I think it would be fun to watch the drama again, just to see how different the events look when you know exactly what is going on. However, I had to dock one mark because there are certain events in the drama that I do not wish to see twice. In the end, the plot does revolve very closely around the theme of murder so that shouldn't come as a surprise. I tried to make this review short, I really did, and look at what happened XD Anyways, my final verdict is that "God's Gift - 14 Days" is absolutely a show worth watching. Even if you're not into thriller-suspense kind of themes, give it a go because, come on, there's Ki Dong Chan in it. Read More Was this review helpful to you?

We don't know why but she is given a second chance to save her daughter and herself by going back in time. The early episodes are excellent as we are thrilled by our heroine's courage followed by despair when it seems like every time the little girl is rescued, another hurdle came along, as though all roads lead to the same inescapable Bo Young is one of my favorite Korean actresses and her performance here is flawless. Her costar Cho Seung-woo is absolutely brilliant as well. He saved the show by his rebellious and so endearing character, what charisma this actor radiates even when he's playing a burnout depressive ex-cop! The little girl is so adorably cute that you just want the show to have more screen time with her, her mom and the ex-cop, instead of scenes after scenes of our leads running after one mysterious serial killer after that's my problem with this show. Without giving away main storyline or spoilers, it seems to me that the script writer equates thrill with the number of serial killers, other bad guys and riddles you can fit into a 16-episode series. How many times can a girl be kidnapped within a story? More than in 24 season 1 for those who have watched that adrenaline-filled classic with Kiefer Sutherland. Instead of a coherent storyline and a fitting ending whether it is happy or tragic we're given a series of riddles and action scenes and an ending that made no sense in terms of providing a logical conclusion that is believable - even within the context of a supernatural thriller. Since this is fiction, I have no issue with the premise of a "second chance". What I am not able to accept is a pseudo-artistic ending where the characters behave in ways beyond any reason with an outcome that's not justified or explained in any would rate the lead actors a 10 while the script and direction get a 4. So while I enjoyed the fantastic performance of the trio of actors, I can only commiserate with them to be letdown by such a miserable script which doesn't know how to tell and end a story, despite a very good start and 3, 2020Contribute to this pageSuggest an edit or add missing contentBy what name was God's Gift 14 Days 2014 officially released in Canada in English?AnswerEdit pageAdd episodeMore to exploreRecently viewedYou have no recently viewed pages

Also the preview of "Doctor Stranger" was quick and really fun! Are you too eager to see Lee Jong Suk again?
